 Editing Workshop

Today Matt showed us how to edit a music video and key techniques which are important to know when editing a music video to make your life easier and creating a better quality video.

When editing the music videos we use the software, premiere pro, the same software we used to film our opening sequence.

A time coded clapper board is used in every take to help sync the footage up. When we shoot our videos we will use an ipad for the clapper board.

Before editing anything it is very important to sync up all your footage to keep it neat. You don't use any of the sound in the original video as it is not clear and doesn't sound as authentic.

There are two different ways of syncing up the footage to the song so the movements and lip syncing in the video is in time with the audio.

Picture syncing

You take the song and put it to a time code. You then find the same time code that was on clapper board and stick the two clips together. This is the most accurate way of syncing up footage.

To not mess up the syncing, you shouldn't drag the clip, instead cut it.

Sound syncing

It is to make sure the sound of the soundtrack and the

You need to rename the video clips - right click rename and be as clear as you can with the names. Say what you see and what time of shot

A performance cut is just an edited video of the performer in the music video, for example no narrative elements just purely the performer. This is helpful as it is important to know how the artist looks in eash rush (clip) and helps identify the best cuts of the artist.

It is imperative to show the singer's face for first line of the lyrics as it establishes her as an artist and the main focus of the video.

You must listen to the music and illustrate what you here in it. For example the speed of the song is telling you how fast to cut. It is also good to follow the movement to see how the artists move.

If you put a shot of something it is good to have some continuity. E.G, put mid shot of guitarist then close up. So it makes more sense and keeps the narrative together.

It is good to clean the edit, meaning that you make sure everything is neat and refined to make a more appealing aesthetic video.

There are rules which are key to this process to make it easier, more time efficient and makes the end product the most profesional.

  1. You should edit one hour at a time as firstly it gives you a good amount of time to focus on the editing as well as make sure you don't lose focus.
  2. You should not show your video to anyone else as firstly the only opinions you need are your teachers and it is time wasting.
  3. It is important to to make any rough cuts of your video as it just gives you more opportunities to make things sloppy and undine. It is best ti have everything perfected and refined at the beginning/ during the process.
